Volunteers Still Needed for Student Competitions at IPhA Annual Meeting

Greetings Members!

This year the Illinois Pharmacists Association (IPhA) will host their annual conference from September 24-27, 2015 at the Westin Lombard in Lombard, IL.  We will host three student competitions during the conference. The committee has started to finalize plans for this year’s annual conference and we feel it is important to engage pharmacy students early in their career.

We are turning to you, the members of this organization, to help out with some of these student events.  The below items will describe your time commitment that you can expect to provide. We would like for all of those that are interested to please email Jessica Kerr by May 12, 2015  - [email protected].

Patient Counseling Competition – This event is held on Friday. Students from each School/College of Pharmacy will compete. The said student will partake in a 5-minute patient counseling competition, very similar to the APhA National Competition.

We are seeking the following:

  • 1-2 Mock Patients – DATE OF ACCOMPLISHED TASK: FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 25, 2015 from 2-7PM. You will be provided the confidential script for this competition 1 week prior.  You will need to make sure you can have fun with your role of the patient but also stay consistent to limit any discrepancies between student interactions.
  • 3 Judges – DATE OF ACCOMPLISHED TASK: SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 26, 2015 for about 3-4 hours.  You will gather with other judges to review the video tape of each competing student.  The time frame for review typically occurs Saturday morning, however this can be determined by the final judging team and the Competition Coordinator. All viewing of the videos will need to be completed before 5PM on Saturday as the winner is presented on Saturday night.

Poster Session – This event is held during the Exhibits on Saturday. Many students, residents and state pharmacists submit abstracts for peer review. This session allows us to take time to discuss research efforts in many arenas of pharmacy (bench research, clinical research, research in teaching and learning, capstone projects, organizational initiatives and other great presentations) throughout the state.

We are seeking the following:

  • 3-5 Judges – DATE OF ACCOMPLISHED TASK: Saturday SEPTEMBER 26, 2015 for about 3 hours during the Exhibits.  You will need to meet with competing students/residents to discuss their research. A rubric will need to be completed immediately after the poster session so results can be tallied and the award can be presented Saturday night.

Business Plan Competition – This event will be held on Friday.  Up to 3 business plans will be selected to be presented by pharmacy students.

We are seeking the following:

  • Up to 5 Preliminary Plan Reviewers: DATES OF ACCOMPLISHED TASK: June to July, 2015 – You have one month to review plans.  You will be provided the plans immediately following student submissions and blinding of the plans/students/university will occur.  A provided rubric will need to be completed and sent back to the coordinator who may then require a conference call to discuss the results (max 1 hour).  I would anticipate that overall commitment would be 3-10 hours depending on your level of experience with business models.  We highly encourage people with past/present business experience and entrepreneurship or personal interest/passion for this topic to volunteer.
  • 3 Judges – DATE OF ACCOMPLISHED TASK: Friday September 25, 2015 for about 3 hours. In addition to a corporate sponsor representative, we will need three qualified judges to determine the fate of each business plan.  A formal rubric is presented and immediate decision will be needed at the end of this competition as the results will be presented on Saturday night.
  • For this call: We ask all of those that volunteer to help with this competition to please submit a brief biography on their business experience.  This competition was very popular in past years not only for the students but also for those wanting to judge.

If you are interested in any of the following please email Jessica Kerr at [email protected] with your specific volunteer activity.  Once a committee has been formed for each student competition she will contact you regarding your involvement.

Thank you for your willingness to volunteer!
